Office Romance: Is It Bad?

Office Romance“Never date anyone in your office” is probably the most popular and common rule there is among companies. There are days when we find love; in the streets, over the internet, school, and even in the office. For working people, office romance is already an existing knowledge but a very taboo thing to talk to. Most employers ‘forbid’ their employees to have any affair inside the office but why are there still some who engage in such? Why it’s such a bad thing to date your co-worker? What are its ups and downs? Read along.

Dating Your Co-worker Is a No No! Dating someone within the office boundaries seems to have such high risks and dangers. Dating someone within your office can be very distracting with work, and has a tendency to lead into hurting someone’s feelings, jealousy, and favoritism. Office relationships are also believed to be unhelpful to the welfare and efficiency of the company, and of course, one cannot escape intrigues, rumors, even disgust from co-employees. Also, what makes office romance a big no no is when the receiving end isn’t comfortable with the other person; which can lead to harassment or lawsuit.

Office Romance IS Possible: Having a relationship with your co-worker is fairly common these days. What is beneficial with having a relationship with your co-worker, or dating your co-worker, is that these two people share the common interest. Having a relationship at work is also a good thing because you get instant help when you need some. Another thing is that office romance makes both people to be more productive at work because when people are happy they tend to be more productive.

Whether your company forbids office romance or not, the point is both parties, including the other co-workers, should respect each other’s decision. If the relationship does not affect both parties’ work performance, then there is nothing wrong with being involved with your co-worker. But if your productivity drops off, maybe one of you should prepare a good exit strategy as to avoid bad reputation and worst, dismissal.
